TRIP DESTINATION WHITE SANDS NATIONAL MONUMENT
Review basic ecological concepts related to the White Sands National Monument and the natural history of this part of the Chihuahuan Desert. During an overnight backcountry trip, students will be introduced to basic camping techniques and have the opportunity to “dune ride” on the World’s largest gypsum sand dunes. Note that this course involves primitive backcountry camping and hiking in sand through a desert; it will be hot and hiking will be difficult. Participants will carry personal and group gear on their backs and by sleds. There is no running water or restroom facility in the backcountry and Park restrooms are not within hiking distance of the backcountry site. This is a true backcountry experience.
